Generators are a steep purchase, which is why Prime Day is a great time to buy.

Amazon/Insider

The best generators can help you live off-grid or keep your home running during a power outage, but they can also be expensive. On October 10 and 11, you can pick up a discounted generator for your home as part of Prime Big Deals Days — Amazon’s newest sales event that falls between Amazon Prime Day in July and Black Friday in November. We’re tracking all the best Prime Day deals, and during this event generators are up to 40% off, so there’s no better time to buy.

Although whole-house generators have a higher price tag, they pack a bigger punch than the average portable generator. If you only want to power a few appliances, a portable generator from one of our favorite brands might be a better option. Anker currently has a stellar discount on our favorite solar generator model that will save you more than $700. You can get the Anker SOLIX F200 Portable Power Station for $2,175 at Amazon.

Portable generators vs. whole-house generators: What’s the difference?

The generator you purchase comes down to cost and power use. A portable generator is generally much cheaper than a whole-house generator, with prices starting as low as $500. They typically run on gas and require a manual connection to your home’s circuit-breaker panel during an emergency. Portable generators also have a smaller power output, which may not be suitable for homes that experience lengthy power outages.

A whole-house generator is much more permanent. This generator is installed on your property outside the home and often connects to your home’s natural gas line if you have one. Permanent installation means this generator will switch on automatically during an outage, so you’ll never have to worry about losing power, even when you’re out of the house. But with this peace of mind comes a big price tag. Whole house generators are more expensive than their portable counterparts, so expect to pay in the thousands for these generators.

Is Prime Day a good time to buy a generator?

Yes. We’re seeing rare discounts on power generators during Prime Day that won’t last long. We haven’t seen these price drops in over a year, so now is a good time to pick up a generator.

What generator brands are the best?

Generators are expensive, so you want to ensure you’re purchasing a quality product. Some of our favorite reliable generator brands include Westinghouse Outdoor Power Equipment, Honda, and Briggs & Stratton. These brands offer solid products that you’ll want to keep an eye out for during Prime Big Deals Days.
